Leven als koning in Valencia

Een jaar geleden vertrokken Pieter en Bob vanuit Amsterdam naar het Spaanse Valencia. Weg uit het jachtige bestaan in Nederland op zoek naar zon en rust. In een oud Victoriaans herenhuis begonnen ze Bed & Breakfast Valencia Mansion.Redactie: Ivanka Eggly Leuke pleintjes en veel groen

Pieter: We hadden in Nederland drukke, fijne banen en leuke vrienden, maar we vroegen ons af: waar doe je het allemaal voor? Onze beste vriend kreeg op zijn 39e een hartinfarct, anderen bleken zich meer te richten op hun hypotheek dan op hun leven. Een rustiger bestaan was voor ons de motivatie het avontuur van een buitenlandse B&B aan te gaan. We lazen ergens 'life is what happens to you when you are making other plans', en we dachten: we doen het nu.

Valencia was eigenlijk een compromis. Bob wilde na Amsterdam per se weer in een stad wonen vanwege het culturele aspect. Pieter wilde juist wat rustigs; een buurtje waar mensen elkaar groeten, leuke pleintjes, veel groen en aan de kust. Valencia bleek het allemaal te bieden. Valencia is in vergelijking met andere grote Europese steden aan de kust nog zeer betaalbaar. Niet alleen qua huizen, maar ook op de markt en in de horeca. Waar eet je een heerlijk driegangenmenu met een glas wijn en koffie met cognac toe voor €11,- ? We zagen Valencia en werden verliefd, met name door de charme van oude gebouwen en Romeinse en Moorse invloeden, aldus Pieter.

Buiten leven

Pieter en Bob vonden een statig pand achter het romantische Plaza de la Virgen in de centraal gelegen Barrio del Carmen. Ze knapten het op en toverden het om tot een smaakvol ingerichte woning met twee kamers voor gasten. Pieter: Mensen vinden het hier fijn, omdat ze zien dat het ook rustiger kan. En Bob en ik genieten. We eten bijna elke dag buiten de deur, het leven speelt zich op straat af. Heerlijk! Soms vragen gasten: wat fijn, die lekkere hangbanken in de zon in jullie loungekamer, maar waar is jullie eigen woonkamer? We moeten dan vaak erg lachen, onze woonkamer is Plaza de la Virgen om de hoek, het geheime natuurstrand op Pinedo - waar blote hippies vrolijk gitaar spelen - we leven hier buiten!

Ontdek Valencia

Wil je zelf het verrassende Valencia ontdekken? Bij Valencia Mansion zit je op loopafstand van alle huzz en buzz van het centrum maar toch heerlijk rustig. Het ontbijt is als in een vijfsterren hotel, maar dan in een kleine setting, met uitzicht op een authentiek Spaans straatje en op de achtergrond het dak van de kathedraal.
